Andrew Ludlow

From an early age and all through my adult life, I have always enjoyed painting as a pleasurable pastime, one of enjoyment and self-fulfilment, a feeling that continues to this day.

Although my chosen career path was as a chemist, I continued to enjoy painting and became quite accomplished, exhibiting locally and engaging in the local Open Studio events. However, the real passion was when I fused the art and the science together and developed my career as a chemist with a profound knowledge and expertise in art materials. I am now based in Llanreath, Pembroke Dock and continue to paint in watercolour.

In September 2013, I presented a painting to the Royal Ulster Rifles Museum in Belfast. The painting, "Landing craft, Infantry 375" is now on permanent display in the Museum. LCI 375 was one of the landing crafts that took the 2 Battalion Royal ulster Rifles to Sword Beach on the morning of 6th June, 1944.

I have long held the view, that many of the artists' colours available in the market place do not live up to the promises made in their marketing materials and so I set about developing my own range of single pigmented watercolours, based on my criteria of high quality as a chemist and my creative needs as an artist. To this end, A J Ludlow Ltd was created in 2018, to follow in the footsteps of the traditional colourmen and allow watercolourists to buy and paint with my professional quality watercolours.

Elected as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales in 2024, I am now looking forward to exhibiting with the Society and promoting and developing watercolour as a creative medium.
