I was born in Bromley, Kent. As a child in the 1940s I spent most of my time out of doors. surrounded by woods and gardens, developing the love of nature which has permeated my life. “Birds, Trees and Flowers" was my favourite book and I drew ‘pictures’ on any clean piece of paper that I could find. Moving to Swansea as a teenager I fell in love with a wide open landscape of water, weedy rocks and windswept trees.
At school I studied Art, English and History to A level…subjects I still relish. The three years at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, were inspiring - as an artist and teacher. We were taught by some of the most exciting artists and craftsmen of the 50s. Stimulated by their work, I became aware of the potential of colour, form, space and pattern, experimenting and enjoying different media.
My paintings have been in exhibitions all over Wales; South West England; in Winchester and the Mall, London. Since 1985 I have been an enthusiastic member of the Watercolour Society of Wales, exhibiting in Iceland and Italy.
Projects include murals for Eleo’s Brasserie, Swansea; two pub signs in Gower; costumes for amateur theatre, book illustrations and art work for Swansea museum.
I taught for many years in secondary schools in Swansea until my sons were born then between 1977 and 1991 I taught part time at the West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education - Illustration, General design, Colour theory, Analytical drawing and Life drawing. For many years I taught at evening classes in Bishopston and have organised painting days and weeks for friends, continuing right up to the covid lockdown. I find teaching rewarding, I want to stimulate observation and share my enthusiasm for all aspects of painting.
