Tony Douglas-Jones
Tony Douglas-Jones has been painting for over 50 years, initially in oils and in watercolour for the last 20 years. Growing up in Penarth, Tony was exposed to the atmospheric moods of the Bristol Channel and spent many happy hours on Penarth beach building dams.
His father worked at the East Moors steelworks in Cardiff and he was taken into the steelworks as a teenager seeing the pouring of steel and the rolling mills firsthand which made a lasting impression.
Over the last twenty years he has returned frequently to the shifting effects of light and atmosphere on the sea and sky and beach particularly in Gower as a source of inspiration. Recent work has focused on Port Talbot where he finds beauty in the massive plant which is always changing, releasing clouds of steam and smoke which wreath and obscure the structures creating movement and mystery. These atmospheric affect are particularly exciting at night when the artificial lights interact with the steam and smoke against the darkness beyond.
Tony first exhibited at the Turner House Gallery in 1968 as a member of The South Wales Art Society and had some early success there selling oil paintings. More recently, Tony has exhibited with the Horton Art group every year in the Horton Village Hall for the last 28 years. He has exhibited in the Attic Gallery, Swansea and the Albany Gallery, Cardiff.
