Tracey-Anne Sitch
I am a watercolour artist with a passion for natural history, and have painted (mainly British) wildlife and wildflowers for as long as I can remember.
Originally from London, I gained a degree in Zoology at Nottingham University in the 1980s and subsequently worked as a commercial artist, illustrator, and freelance paint-and-trace artist in the animation industry. During this time I continued to exhibit my own work in London and Hampshire where we then lived.
I moved to Wales in !999 with my family, and having raised two sons to school age I resumed painting, and now exhibit both locally and nationally, often in specialist wildlife exhibitions, some jury-selected (www.ewa-uk.com, www.southernnatureart.com, www.twasi.com), and have also been jury-selected into exhibitions of miniature art (www.royal-miniature-society.org, www.hilliardsociety.org). I have won several awards for my paintings, including the watercolour prize in this year's open art exhibition at Oriel Cric gallery. I was artist-in-residence at Craft Renaissance gallery for several years, and have done a residence at the museum of Nature In Art, Gloucester (www.natureinart.org.uk)
I enjoy painting in tight detail - not easy in this challenging medium - and in styles that vary from simple portraits to elaborate 'frame-breaking' work. Composition, a strong narrative, plus capturing the character and behaviour of my subjects, are more important to me than realism, and I am inspired by Victorian bird artists like Archibald Thorburn, John Gould and Edward Lear, as well as the intricate pattern designs of William Morris and Alphonse Mucha
Welsh connections:
We live in Usk, Wales and I am currently represented by Oriel Cric, Crickhowell (www.visitcrickhowell.wales) and Frogmore Street gallery, Abergavenny (frogmorestreetgallery.co.uk). I am a member of Made In Monmouthshire (madeinmonmouthshire.co.uk) which is a group of Monmouthshire-based artisans. I like to represent Welsh wildlife and wild habitats in my paintings where possible, increasingly finding inspiration in the wildlife and landscapes of this beautiful country, and one of my four published paperback books is a Welsh alphabet featuring British birds with their Welsh names (Y Wyddor Wyllt Gymraeg). I have also produced illustrations for Gwent Wildlife Trust to use on their tote bags and in their magazines.
